The Southeast Missouri Amateur Radio Association (SEMO ARA) has several purposes. First and foremost, it's a group to promote legal amateur radio use and fellowship with other hams. We have monthly meetings the second Thursday of each month at 7 pm at 2414 Katy Lane in Poplar Bluff. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
In addition we have picnics, fox hunts, an e-news letter, an active Amateur Radio Emergency Service club (ARES) that meets every week on the air for training, and many other opportunities to serve the community.
Next we wish to provide emergency communications for Butler County when called upon should all the normal means of communication fail. Very often, cell towers overload or come down, floods knock out communications, landlines get destroyed, or other things happen that knock out normal communications. Ham radio operators are often the unsung heroes that check on families, pass messages, and get supplies where they are needed. We hold two practice nets on Monday evenings, one on 145.350 repeater at 7:30 pm and one on 146.910 repeater at 8 pm.
Third, we offer education and testing. Classes for obtaining amateur radio licenses are held often and support is quick coming as "Elmers" step up to help the new folks. We are family friendly and welcome children that wish to gain a license to operate amateur Radio. CERT is in the planning, as well as FEMA training.
There are many other reasons to become part of this exciting club. Come see us soon.
